DIY Chalkboard!

edited title image

Hello everyone! Today I will be showing you how to make a do-it-yourself chalkboard. These can be made to any shape or size you desire and are perfect decorations all year ’round! I love writing a festive message on mine using different colored chalk depending on what season it is. It makes a perfect decoration for any holiday arrangement!

To make this chalkboard, you will need…

  • A wooden board
  • Chalkboard Paint
  • Paint brush
  • Chalk

I found my chalkboard paint at Target in the dollar bins. It was a small container (1 floz/ 30mL) but I still had some left over after making my chalkboard!

I already had this wooden board at home, but other materials will work as well!

Begin by painting on some chalkboard paint to your board.

You will need two coats of chalkboard paint before using. Apply the first coat in one direction, and allow it to dry over night.

Once the first coat is dried, apply the second coat of chalkboard paint in the opposite direction, and again let it dry over night. Although chalkboard paint dries fairly quickly, waiting over night for the paint to dry ensures it will not be smudged once you start drawing on it with chalk! I waited a few days before moving on to the next step.

Once both coats of the chalkboard paint is dried, there is one last step you need before you can use it! Rub chalk over the entire chalkboard like so. Then, wipe the board off using a cloth! This prepares the chalkboard for future use.

After this you are all done! How did you make your chalkboard? Leave a comment below!

Until next time,
